Event Background

Background:

The United Nations Global Compact initiative with about 7000 signatories from 130 countries is the largest voluntary corporate citizenship and responsible business initiative in the world. One of the unique features of the Global Compact initiative is the existence of 80 Local Networks in key markets across the world. The networks provide a multi stakeholder platform to Global Compact signatories to engage in efforts to root their responsible business interventions within local country level contexts.

In today’s world more and more companies are reaching out beyond their borders and are operating in a multi country environment. Corporations today are at the core of the efforts to evolve an inclusive global market. There is a growing acceptance in Board Rooms across the world on the need to embed Responsible Business practices into core business operations.

The 21st century is increasingly being viewed as the Asian Century. While the fulcrum of Global Business slowly shifts towards Asia, the countries in the region are also faced with Economic, Environmental, Social and Governance challenges that are unparallel in the history of Humankind. Several of the economies in the region have been experiencing high economic growth yet wide spread poverty persists in many of the countries in the region.

The Conclave would be an opportunity for businesses across the region and beyond to explore how the Global Compact platform can help to address such concerns across the region. Holding of this conclave in India has a special significance in view of the recent emphasis on Corporate Social Responsibility, the notable event being the release of voluntary CSR guidelines for the corporate sector by the Minister of Corporate Affairs in the presence of the Hona’ble President of India on 21st December 2009.
